The Jho Low Pardon: What If Trump Says Yes?

Jho Low Could Just Walk Free? In America, of All Places?

Should a man accused of stealing billions from the Malaysian people simply walk free with a signature in America?

In shocking news, fugitive financier Jho Low has formally requested a presidential pardon from Donald Trump.

The request was filed recently and is now public on the US Justice Department’s website. If granted, it would erase all US criminal charges against him.

For now, there’s a small relief. A White House official said the request is not currently under active review. But with Trump, things can change quickly.

This is deeply painful for Malaysians. Jho Low is widely seen as the mastermind behind the 1MDB scandal, one of the biggest thefts in Malaysia’s history.

From 2009 to 2015, US prosecutors say he and his associates siphoned off at least US$4.5 billion from our sovereign wealth fund. That was rakyat’s money meant for development, education, healthcare and helping the poor.

Instead, the money allegedly paid for luxury yachts, Hollywood films, expensive parties, private jets, and huge bribes. Jho Low himself is accused of pocketing over US$1.4 billion.

The scandal caused massive public anger, contributed heavily to the fall of the previous government in 2018, and led to the conviction and imprisonment of former Prime Minister Najib Razak on 1MDB-related charges.

Jho Low has been hiding from justice since 2018. Now, reports say he is telling US authorities he can “help make deals happen” in exchange for his freedom.

If Trump approves the pardon, Malaysia cannot block it. Even though Malaysian charges would remain, a US pardon would make it much harder to arrest and extradite him.

It would feel like a huge betrayal to millions of Malaysians whose money was stolen.

Many would see it as the powerful protecting their own while ordinary citizens continue paying the price for the lost billions.

Whether through pardon or asylum, the message is worrying: the mastermind of one of the world’s largest financial scandals might escape justice in America.

This is not just an American legal matter. It is about whether Malaysia will ever see real justice for the theft of our national wealth.
